Dr. Barney Melekian is the Interim Police Chief for Santa Barbara, CA Police Department. He served as assistant county executive officer over public safety for Santa Barbara County Government, and was previously the undersheriff with the Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Department.
He served for 23 years with the Santa Monica Police Department, and 13 years as chief of the Pasadena Police Department. From 2009 to 2013, Mr. Melekian was appointed as the Director of the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services in the U.S. Department of Justice.
Dr. Melekian served in the United States Army, and later as a member of the United States Coast Guard Reserve. He served in Operation Desert Storm in Saudi Arabia. He retired from the Coast Guard Reserves after 26 years of service and earned a Doctorate from the University of Southern California.
